Santee's history started with the establishment of the Old Mission Dam in 1779 under the direction of Fr. Junipero Serra. It provided water to the Mission San Diego de Alcala, and the site is preserved in the historic Old Mission site near the western entrance to the town. Santee's business climate is growing and expanding due to its location and its convenient proximity to all areas of the county. The town center has 706 acres that are master planned for mixed use. Santee has the highest median household income of the East County cities and one of the lowest crime rates.
